The first step of drilling waste management: separate the solid cuttings from drilling mud. Companies could use many technologies to manage the drilling waste once the solid cuttings and liquid drilling mud have been separated.

Regarding the Waste minimization, there are many practices that can reduce volumes or impacts of wastes:

(1) drilling practices that minimize generation of wastes: directional drilling, drilling smaller diameter holes, drilling technologies that use less drilling fluid.

(2) using mud or chemical additives with lower environmental impacts: synthetic-based muds, new drilling fluid systems, alternate weighting agents.

Regarding the recycle and reuse, there are also some practices that find other use for drilling waste:

(1) beneficial use of drilling wastes: recycling drilling mud, road spreading, reuse cuttings for construction purpose, restoration of wetlands using cuttings, use of oily cuttings as fuel.

Regarding the disposal, there are some practices to get rid of drilling wastes:

(1) onsite burial (pits, landfills)

(2) land application, land farming, land spreading.

(3) discharge to ocean

(4) offshore disposal to commercial facility

(5) slurry injection
