The difference of the equipment is that in terms of performance, centrifuges with freezing are much more expensive than ordinary ones. Some centrifuges also have heating functions. The more control programs, the higher the price of the centrifuge. The big difference is the configuration. Sometimes the price of accessories is higher than the price of the equipment. The selection of the Decanter Centrifuge is essentially to find a specific machine that can meet the process requirements according to the physical properties of the materials and the process requirements.

The physical parameters related to the selection mainly include:

1.The parameters of Solid-liquid separation: the solid phase concentration of the suspension, the range of the particle size of the solid particles, the weight difference between the solid and the liquid, and the liquid viscosity.
2.The parameters of Solid-liquid-liquid separation: the solid-liquid-liquid 3-phase concentration, specific gravity difference, and viscosity.
3.Moreover, it is also important to consider the machine materials and structures such as pH, flammable and explosive, and abrasion resistance.

Another issue related to the selection is the purpose of separation. Different models have different purposes. In recent years, the as the demand for environment protection is becoming more and more important, in some countries, there were even conflicts between the local residents and the oil companies or drilling companies. Companies would like to pay money on the disposal of the drilling cuttings, or, they have to face penalty even larger than the cost paid on the drilling waste management solutions.

The drilling waste management solutions for the oil and gas drilling could be divided into 2 groups: the treatment for the drilling cuttings and the treatment for the drilling fluids, the old mud.

The solution suppliers are bringing out several solutions for each group of drilling waste management, for example, in order to treat the old mud, there are several different ways, and among those, the decanter centrifuge and filter press are most prominent 2.

What they have in common?

Both of decanter centrifuge and the filter press need some chemicals to do the job, to separate out the extra fine particles from the drilling fluid.

What are the differences?

The decanter centrifuge uses the high G force generated by high speed rotating of the bowl to separate the solids from the liquid, while the filter press’ working principal is to squeeze the liquid from the solids through some filter with small holes and make the solids phase into a cake.

How are their performances?

Per their treating result, both solutions could treat out 90% solids from the liquid, especially the decanter centrifuge, the percentage is up to 95%. But when take the total cost into consideration the decanter centrifuge clearly wins out because: 1. The centrifuge uses less water than filter press. 2. Less electricity consumption. 3. Dewatering technology is greatly use for chemical separation of the solids phase form the liquid. By using some chemicals, the fine particles of solids flocculate into larger ones and to be separated out from the liquid phase. Take the oil and gas drilling mud industry as example, there are 2 main methods to be used, the dewatering centrifuge and the filter press. Seen from their outlook and working principle, they are quite different, but which to choose and why to choose is not only based on the first look, we need a detailed calculation.

  1. Purchasing cost. The cost for buying each of them is no much different, and also comparing with future consumption, this cost seems less important.
  2. The chemicals consumed: because of the high speed and high G force of the decanter centrifuge, no much chemical is needed. But in case of filter press, more chemicals in need for fulfil the work.
  3. Water usage amount: the decanter centrifuge need to be flushed only after continuous operating and the water consumption for each time is 3-4 cbm per day, but the filter press need to be flushed all over after usage, need around 150 cbm per day. In some water scarce place, this factor has to be taken into consideration.
  4. Human force needed: it is not a heavy work to operate or observe the operation of the decanter centrifuge, so one person for one centrifuge is enough. In case when several centrifuges are at same place, even one operator can work for them all. But in case of filter press, one filter press need at least 2 persons to run it.
  5. Spare parts: the spare parts for decanter centrifuge is less than the filter press.

GN’s decanter centrifuge has two types of control methods, one of which is making the decanter centrifuge running at a fixed speed, the other one is driving the centrifuge with program through a VFD panel. As the name implies, the panel could control the decanter centrifuge to run at variable speed to meet the operation demand.

However, it was too simple if the VFD panel can only drive the centrifuge to run with a wide range of speed. The VFD panel should be much smart than only speed control. GN’s decanter centrifuge is driven by 2 motors; one main drive for the bowl speed, the other one auxiliary is for screw propellers. GN’s VFD is for three devices, main motor, back motor and feeding pump motor. For the decanter centrifuge, the operator could input the bowl speed and differential speed on the touch screen, with these 2 speeds, the program will then calculate the back drive speed.

GN’s 14 inch decanter centrifuge is designed with Max. speed up to 3900RPM, however, the for oil filed drilling mud cleaning application, the operators will not run the centrifuge at a so high speed. GN solids control VFD panel could classify the speed into 2 steps. The first step is from 0 to normal working speed like 3200 RPM. In this range, all the operators could set the speed in any value. For higher speed, only the director or manager could set it by inputting the pass word first.

GN’s panel can also monitor the temperature of the bearing and the current to protect the centrifuge. Like GN’s panel will collect the signal from the sensors at the bearing and transfer it into visual data thus the operator will know the actual temp. at the bearing. GN also has windows to show the Ampere percentage of the motor current. Once the actual Ampere reaching up to pre-set value, the machine will trip off.

Operators need read GN VFD panel manual carefully before running it. It takes some time to know how to operate GN VFD centrifuge well.

Mud plant is very important application in solids control industry for oil and gas drilling industry. It is used to further treat and to storage the drilling mud back from the solids control system of rig site and get the drilling mud to be ready for next time use.

What equipment is used for a mud plant?

Normally, the mud plants’ main application is for storage the drilling mud, and adding some necessary chemicals into the mud. So the commonly used equipment is:

  1. Mud agitators. Where there’s mud, there’s agitator. Because if the mud is still for a while, the heavy components in the mud would settle down to the bottom and as long as they settle down, it is difficult or even impossible to re-stir them. So mud agitator is a continuously working equipment in a mud plant. GNJBQ series mud agitators covers all necessary models for oil and gas use mud agitators, it is compact in structure and with a powerful strength. Based on your tank depth, GN could recommend you with suitable model of mud agitator.
  2. Mud guns. Normally, the mud gun and mud agitator are used in pairs, like besides each mud agitator, there’s a mud gun. As the mud agitator is working in the middle of the tank, the mud gun is used to stir the mud in the tank corner. GN mud gun is suitable for high pressure up to 6.4 Mpa, and there are fixed nozzle models and rotary nozzle models for option. In addition to the main application as stirring the drilling mud at tank corner, the mud gun could also be used for transporting the mud from one tank to another.
  3. Jet mixing system. It is combined by a jet mixing hopper and a feeding pump for the hopper. For making the old mud to be suitable for future use, we need to add some chemicals into the mud. GNSLS series hoppers are made of stainless steel, with same or even better material than USA brands and with a longer service life.
